Less pulling, but dog doesnt like it June 9, 2008 The gentle leader makes it much easier to control my dogs pulling. My lab doesnt pull nearly as hard, but she stops mid walk and try to pull off the leader with her front paws. I'm hoping she'll get used to the leader and stop doing that. The leader is wonderful for my bassett hound. The bassett could slip out of regular collars and pulled too hard with a harness. This works much better.
Very good product.. only small flaws April 10, 2008 I agree with most of the positive reviews on this product. I really believe my 85 lb black lab is well trained, but on walks she proves me wrong and tries to pull me around. I've tried other products such as the gentle leader that goes around her chest and it is only a SLIGHT improvement.
With this leash I can literally walk her with my fingers. Any slight little tug keeps her from pulling and walking right with me. She doesnt even seem to mind it on her nose at all. Every once in a while she'll rub her face on my leg, but that's it. She even looks forward and let me put it right on her from the beginning.
The only negative I've found and what keeps this from being absolutely perfect is that my dog able to back out of it. She gets scared around loud kids and such and sometimes doesnt want to walk forward when she sees/hears them ahead. If she backs at all it slides off her face, and there is no way to pull her forward with this leash. The safety strap keeps her from getting away, but I have to slide it back on her nose. Really this isnt a huge deal, and is the only problem I have.
All in all I love it and tell everyone how great it is at keeping dogs from pulling.
Not Recommended April 4, 2008 Long, long delay in shipping. Overpriced. Vet does not recommend. Discarded this piece of junk.
Get your leadership position back; make your dog a follower January 18, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Whenever you are around your dog your dog is judging your ability to lead and most of us are failing without even knowing it. This dog halter really makes a big difference in your ability to gain the leadership position once again. You don't have to yank or cause your dog to choke.
It can not choke your dog or damage his or her neck. You don't have to be strong to be able to control a dog with this collar on. My 106 pound dog cannot pull me off my feet when wearing this collar even when he see a deer.
If your dog has been playing the leader for a while expect him or her to test the head collar by trying to get it off their nose over and over again. Don't whip out and give up the first time the dog fusses and wants the halter off. This collar is much gentler and safer to use than a choke collar of even a flat regular collar. Soon the fussing will end if you work with the dog each day.
I used this head halter on a very strong and domain male German Shepherd dog and he fought the collar off and on for nearly two and half months before finally wearing it with no bother. BUT for most dogs you will NOT get this long of a struggle for leadership.
The two dogs I am now using it on - a 106 pound GSD and a 34 pound ACD (blue heeler) mix are doing great with just few times each walk where they try to remove the collar. This will get less and less with time. The more a dog fights the collar the more they are showing you that they need it - that they have been in control all this time.
I am using the large size collar for my 106 pound dog. I am happy with the collar. Unless your dog eats the collar it will last for a great many years.
NOTE: never leave this halter on a dog that you are not walking, take it off and leave their regular flat collar on that has name tags.
This collar is much less cruel than letting your dog grow into a wild terror and then sending him to the animal shelter. Watch the dog whisper on TV.
P.S. I use clicker training along with this collar and highly recommend you try that to as it speeds the training process. Walk your dog for 30 minutes a day and you will have a GREAT dog and both of you will be happier and healthier too.
I live in the Louisiana pine woods with three dogs and one cat.
Really has made walks much better September 23, 2007 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I have a 110 pound mutt who really is pretty smart. Most of the time. Unfortunately, once we go a on walk, he forgets that he is smart, and pulls like crazy. Of course, I'm sure I ultimately could have trained him not to pull, but after many tries, I got frustrated, he got frustrated, and we never got to enjoy our walks. The gentle leader works very well. He complained a little about it when we first got it, but I just had him wear it for a few minutes longer each day while giving him treats (he's very food motivated, except when it comes to not pulling my arm out of socket everytime he sees a bird when we are walking), so after about 4 days, he tolerated wearing it and our walks are delightful now.
You do need to be careful how you use it. You can't jerk the leash at all, but you don't need to, really.
I am a believer, and recommend the GL to anyone with a large dog who pulls.
