Very difficult to clean this one and there are much simpler ones out there! November 13, 2008 J. Schwatka I read about the benefits of cat fountains and used this one for a full year of my life, struggling with it every week. The parts are complicated and do not disassemble easily. There are 2 large parts that need to be unscrewed from one another, and one in particular gets sort of jammed when the water creates a seal in it and then very difficult to unscrew. I kept thinking how someone with arthritis or who was elderly or just not very strong could never use this thing. I thought that there must be more user-friendly ones out there, and I am so grateful to find out that there are! I decided to try the Drinkwell Platinum fountain out to see if I could make this any easier. I wish I had done this a year ago. The cats seem like this one even more than the Cat-it, and it disassembles and reassembles so easily! What a huge relief! I'm just going to recycle this thing. Pay the few extra bucks for the Drinkwell and know that you have saved yourself a lot of frustration.
Love This Fountain November 11, 2008 Evi (USA) I had the Cat It Fountain for about 4 years now, and I will admit that it is a hassle with changing the filters all the time, but other then that the fountain works grreat. I never had to replace it and I never had problems with the pump. I clean it once a week and change the filters every two weeks, my cats love it and so do I.
very disappointed October 26, 2008 Erika (Atlanta, GA) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
What a horrible product. While I admit that my cat (who's not a big drinker) likes this fountain, I absolutely hate it. Having had a similar fountain I needed to replace, I thought this one seemed like a good option. How wrong I was! I don't know what it is, but this thing gets completely covered in slime and needs a THOROUGH cleaning every 5 days - even the motor. Otherwise it clogs up with the slime and then the fountain doesn't function. Of course, now that I've had this fountain for about 6 months, the motor's starting to go out, too. Great. Anyhow, the entire cleaning process takes a good 10-15 minutes every time. AND, though the filters are supposed to last for several weeks, I'm having to replace them every week or two (due to the vast quantities of slime!). And at $2 a filter, well, you do the math! I would NEVER recommend this fountain to anyone. I wish I could get my $40 back that I now have to spend on a different fountain. UGH. What a waste.
Love it! October 8, 2008 Elizabeth Trehern (Lafayette, LA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I bought this product about 3 months ago after my pet sitter forgot to add water to my previous water fountain and managed to kill it. When I went to get a replacement, I saw this one and thought "why not". I have extremely particular cats and they won't go near that Drinkwell fountain for some reason.. So I brought it home, set it up (FYI - make sure you use the directions - this is NOT a "do it yourselfer") and my cats absolutely loved it!! I have 2 adult cats - 16 & 20 lbs, plus 3 additional rescued kittens at the moment and they all drink out of it.. Now I do have to re-fill every day (sometimes twice a day), but had I known that I was going to end up with so many cats in my house I would have bought the larger fountain! That being said, I have never used the feeder and that may be the problem people are having with the "clogging". One of my cats loves to dunk his food in the water before he eats it and that is murder on a fountain. I've fixed this problem by leaving a water bowl by the food and moving the water fountain to the other side of the room. I have previously had problems with calcium buildup in other fountains, so I started using bottled water in this one. It's now about 3 months in and no problems whatsoever - I just leave a reminder for my petsitter to refill the fountain now!
Great idea if it actually worked October 7, 2008 Heather 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
At first I loved this product and so did my 2 picky cats. But then problems started emerging. It became noisy when the water level got too low, and I had to add water daily to it. From day one the water did not cover the entire dome, only a quarter of the dome had water running down it. And then the motor died after less than 2 months. I took it back to PetSmart where I purchased it and exchanged it. This second one lasted two weeks and then the motor died. I took the motor apart, no obvious problems, and it worked for another two days before it died again and now it won't start up. I agree with the previous review that said the filter falls apart easily and the water gets slimey easily. I would recommend finding another product. I know I am.
