Terrific book for beginning to intermediate trainers! May 9, 2006 Sympawtico Dog Training, LLC 8 out of 10 found this review helpful
I recommend this book to all of my beginning and intermediate dog training clients. Intelligent, funny, and easy to read, it walks the student through basic dog training exercises step-by-step-by-step. Good pictures, too!
Basic Training for the Novice and More. April 24, 2006 B. Lupori (Central, IL USA) 13 out of 14 found this review helpful
I have a home library positively stacked with books on the human-dog relationship, the different methods of dog training, and every basic training book imaginable-- Pat's is the best to get you started. Her writing methods are clear, concise and down to the point. She effectively breaks down tricks and commands so that any dog can easily be taught. My only objection was the breakdown of the six-week course . . . . I thought the order of the tricks was somewhat obscured, and that some commands would be mastered so quickly as to make the six-week schedule useless. Granted my fancy is one of the easiest to train-- the Australian Shepherd, but I was still amazed when my dog Karley was able to excel through Pat's six-week course in less than two weeks. I've trained a lot of dogs, and a lot of Australian Shepherds-- and Karley is no more obedient naturally than any other. I attribute her amazing learning curve to Pat's advice. I would reccomend this book to anyone, but particularly any novice looking to get the basic obedience started on the right foot.
Living large with an opionated dog March 28, 2006 H. J. Pate (BC, Canada) 10 out of 11 found this review helpful
If I had used the "make the dog obey" theories and techniques on my opinionated male Great Dane, he wouldn't be here today. He is too big for me to "make" him do anything. He is also a sensitive beast and needs encouragement not punishment. I had to find ways that did 2 things: make it easier for him to do what I asked and offer him the rewards that HE values. Pat Miller's book showed me how to do that. Pat's book gives the theory and the practical steps to apply to your dog. One book cannot cover ALL possible situations but as the basic primer for most dogs and their humans, this one does the job. This book is the one at the top of my list. It's for people new to dogs and to those who want a way to train themselves and their dog into a more comfortable and complementary relationship.
Excellent book for learning to communicate with your dog December 31, 2005 Denise Bonds (Bay Area California) 13 out of 13 found this review helpful
I read this book two years ago, and have been applying the techniques ever since. What I liked about this book: The techniques taught in this book are far superior to traditional dog training methods, like pushing down on the dogs back to teach them to sit. I found this book to be a very easy and enjoyable read. It taught me how to earn the respect of my dogs and also help them feel challenged and interested with each new lesson. This book lays out specific lesson plans on what to teach your dog during each "training session" but perhaps more importantly, once you understand the method behind the lessons, you can apply these techniques to just about anything you want to teach your dog. This book's techniques are based on rewarding positive behavior with the clicker/treat method when the dog does something RIGHT and building a bond and having mutual trust and respect between you and your dog. Once my dog figured out she got a treat for doing something good, she was constantly trying to do something that she would get a click and a treat for--even when we were not in the middle of a lesson! I can't think of anything that I did not like about this book. I have an older dog, who I tried to train with more of a "break him of doing that" method, and it only taught him to not trust or respect me as his pack leader. I decided to try a new approach to training when we got the new puppy two years ago, and it has been the most rewarding experience for us as doggy-parents, and hopefully for her too. She's the most well behaved dog and always eager to comply with my request. Around the same time that my husband and I got our puppy, an acquaintance of ours also got a new puppy. While this acquaintance trained her dog using the agressive "break-her-spirit" method involving choke chains and bullying her around when she wanted the dog to do something for her, I observed her dog as being confused, frustrated and angry. To this day, that dog is not very obedient, and seems to only comply to request out of fear. It's so sad...
