In a no-nonsense, realistic manner, Mr. Kilcommons takes the mystery out of dog training. The author makes it very clear that there are no secrets in creating a well-trained dog, but it does require commitment, perseverance and patience. It's truly inspirational to the novice dog owner!

5 out of 5 stars excellent book for novice and experienced dog owners.   December 28, 1996

I am a dog obedience instructor and this is the text I recommend to all my students. It provides a sound discussion of canine behavior and how to communicate effectively with your dog. All techiniques discussed are humane, fair , and well grounded in dog behavior. If you have a dog, you should own this book

5 out of 5 stars I'm completely grateful for this book!   September 12, 1996

I've read this book cover to cover, twice! It set aside all of my fears of puppy training. Sometimes, when you're a parent, you think you don't have time to puppy train. Read this book and you'll find out how wrong you are! This book gives some of the best tips on training I have been able to find out there, from beginning housetraining to instructing you on how to train your dog to down-stay. It teaches you to be a good owner, and how to properly work with your dog. I'm not intimidated by training anymore, training your dog is always something that is your responsibility, and not the dog's. This book gives all the insight you could ever need on how to train your dog. Do you dog a favor and buy a copy of this book.

This book works! In just a few short weeks, my puppy already knows and obeys sit, come, down, stay, and off! Now, we're working on "leave it". It is filled with clear steps accompanied with illustrative photos. There are also side bars with real life examples of both good training and typical mistakes
